ABSTRACT
A screening study was performed with the following aim: to identify high risk patients for diabetic foot and to investigate the frequency of diabetic fool and osleoporosis among members of Varna's Diabetic Association. The object of investigation consisted of 141 patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Twenty patients had type 1 diabetes and 121 had type 2 diabetes. Vibration sensation, Doppler ankle-arm systolic pressure and peripheral radial bone-mineral density were investigated. Osteodensitometry was carried out by means of Osteometer-DTX-200. Patients at risk for complicated diabetic foot were identified. High frequency of diabetic polineuropathy, macroangiopathy, osteopenia and osteoporosis was established. Screening revealed diabetic macroangiopathy in 32% of patienfs (newly diagnosed in 48%), diabetic peripheral neuropathy in 50% (newly diagnosed in 20%), osteopenia in 41% (newly diagnosed in 100%) and osteoporosis in 23% (newly diagnosed in 90%). The applied screening by simple, non-invasive methods revealed a high frequency of diabetic foot risk factors and osteoporosis among members of Varna's Diabetic association. it is a form of active prevention and identification of high risk patients. The screening for osteoporosis and diabetic foot has to be considered as an essential part of the diabetic patients prevention and diagnostic program.
