ABSTRACT
Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are common endocrinologic disorders affecting many organ systems. Neurological dysfunction is associated with diseases of the thyroid gland which usually result from hormonal imbalance. Musculoskeletal and neurological involvement present themselves as muscle weakness, fatigue, peripheral neuropathy and ophthalmopathy. In this study 28 hyperthyroid patients (mean age 42 SD 8 years), 21 hypothyroid (mean age 44 SD 12 years) patients, and 30 healthy persons (mean age 43 SD 9 years) were taken. We evaluated the patients with electrophysiological tests such as somatosensorial, visual and brainstem auditory evoked potentials, caloric tests and eleclroneuromyography. Abnormal evoked potentials latencies and nystagmic responses were observed in patients. As a conclusion, electrophysiological studies can be useful in the diagnosis of asymptomatic central and peripheral neuropathy in hypo- and hyperthyroid patients.
